I'm embarking on the adventure of self-publishing, and it's a real challenge!

The initial challenge was to write a book whose theme I had come up with quite by chance. What I didn't know was that the publishing adventure would become another challenge.

My experience on the subject is very limited—to say the least!—but I want to share this brand new adventure with you, almost live.

The first question: how to publish?

At first, I didn't ask myself whether or not I was going to publish.

Then, as I progressed in my writing, it was on the way to being shared — Why? Answer perhaps, in another post 😊 — and the first question that arose for me was, how? So I simply did some research on the internet, and I quickly realized that “traditional” publishing, that is to say going through a publishing house, would be complicated. Especially since I live several thousand kilometers from mainland France. I was therefore going to have to self-publish.

But another aspect also pushed me towards the path of self-publishing: freedom!

The freedom of self-publishing

Self-publishing is much more flexible; you're free to choose every aspect of publication: editing your writing, book cover, advertising, production... Of course, it's more work, and especially more time spent researching, comparing, and choosing what's best for you. Of course, it depends on your own goals.

What saved me a lot of time was ChatGPT. I'll talk more about it in a future post, as there's a lot to talk about AI.

Digital or paper?

The second question I was faced with was: what kind of edition? Digital, an eBook, or paper, like any good book you hold while sitting in a comfortable armchair with a coffee within reach 😊

Again, it depends on your goal and your financial means, because the big disadvantage of self-publishing, beyond the work involved, is the cost. In self-publishing, it's the author who bears all the costs. And clearly, for those with limited means, you should choose the digital version.

Because the second major advantage of the digital version is its accessibility. Digital publishing allows you to reach readers worldwide, and quickly. Because as soon as it's online, your book can be purchased. Be careful, however, not to forget an English version, or another language, depending on where you want to be accessible.

The Disadvantages of Digital Self-Publishing

However, as you might expect, there are also drawbacks, aside from the costs. Due to its ease of access, digital publishing is much more competitive, and you have to make yourself visible among the millions of eBooks that may exist. Another drawback is piracy. Although protected from the outset by copyright, it's easy to get illegally copied.

Finally, although in the digital age, in the world of reading, repels a large number of readers, who could have bought your book, if it had been in paper format.

Freedom comes at a price, but the experience is worth it:

Freedom comes at a price, as you can see. But that makes the experience all the more beautiful. And what pride to say one day to your grandchildren, sitting in an armchair, while reading them a story: “Did you know that your grandfather wrote and published this book himself?”

Because whether it's digital or paper, you don't have to choose when it comes to self-publishing. Both are possible. But I'll tell you about that in a future post, when my adventure has progressed even further!

And you, what do you think about self-publishing?
