Welcome to the universe of 2099
A fiction
A not-so-distant future
Welcome to the world of 2099!
My name is Éric. I live in New Caledonia and I’m the author of 2099, a dystopian science fiction novel set in a world shaped by ecological transition, technological advancements, and deep societal changes.
I never planned to write a book.
It all started as a personal challenge in January 2023… and became a novel.
This blog shares the behind-the-scenes journey: how 2099 was created, from doubts to discoveries.
2099 will be released in July as an eBook, with a paperback edition to follow.
An English eBook version is also planned.
It’s a story about humanity — one man and his family facing a transformed world. Themes include family ties, personal choices, inequality, ecology, and technology — very real issues, projected into a not-so-distant future.
If you enjoy sincere storytelling and reflections on our changing society, you’re in the right place.

Why I wrote this book
06/04/25
In January 2023, I set myself a personal challenge: to write a novel.
I had never even considered such an idea before — so why?
Simply to see if I was capable of it.
And here’s the story:
A few days after New Year’s Eve, like many people, my partner and I were feeling tired, not exactly motivated to get back to work. While making breakfast, I threw out a little joke — I won’t tell you what it was just yet, but one day, you’ll understand.
I thought: that would make a great subject for a book. The idea stuck in my mind, and I told myself: “Why not write that book?”
On January 10th — my birthday, in case you feel like giving me a present 😊 — I turned on my computer, opened a blank Word document, and started writing.
I wrote the first 19 chapters on my own, over a few months. The goal was to finish the book within the year, as a birthday gift for my partner.
But then, as often happens, life took over. The project was put on hold.
In early 2024, I wanted to get back to it. Seriously this time. Finish what I had started.
But the news in New Caledonia shook everything up.
The motivation was gone, my mind elsewhere…
At the start of 2025, I decided to return to it. I reread my 19 chapters, but although the ideas were there, I struggled to organize them.
Then an idea came to me: to try an experiment — artificial intelligence. What could it bring me, this tool that everyone seemed to praise as so magical?
Not to write for me. But to help me keep pace, stay organized, and regain momentum.
And it worked. I finished the novel.
Today, this blog is here to share the story.
Behind the scenes. Sincere and honest. Just the facts. But that’s for another time.
If you’re curious — welcome.
"2099: A Novel Born from a Joke, Yet Questioning Our Future"
13/06/25
When I first started writing the book, I didn’t have a clear idea in mind. I completely let my imagination run free. But soon, it became clear that my imagination was rooted in the world we live in today. My imagination isn't overflowing with fantastic worlds, but rather, it stems from our current reality, from the world we're living in, and, therefore, from the consequences that could follow.
This book reflects, starting from my initial idea—just to remind you, it was a joke, not a real idea to write—a world in which I imagine us living in the future.
Very quickly, the title "2099" came to mind. Why? I don't really know. I just thought it was simple and memorable, and most importantly, impactful—it's the last year of the century. We all remember the year 1999, the year of the Y2K bug. The story had to take place that year.
This novel is not about a technological world as I imagine the future. At least, I believe the future will be much more advanced than what I depict. I didn't focus too much on this, although some details do touch on it. The main focus quickly shifted to a human story. I believe—actually, I’m sure now—that it was important for me for many readers to relate to my story.
Naturally, my story revolves around a family, living in a normal way—or almost—with their values, their daily lives, and their choices.
The role of the father, the place of women, the family, are all central to this work. I hope you will recognize yourself, your family... but in a few decades.
I also explore the consequences of what we have lived through recently, and what we are still living today. From the pandemic at the beginning of the 2020s, the war in Europe between Ukraine and Russia, to the ongoing energy transition, which is at the heart of many political discussions today.
By 2035… an Europe with only electric cars: that's for tomorrow. But I take it further. What role will energy play in 2099? How will it be accessible, to whom, and at what cost?
So, what will be the consequences of all these current issues in 2099? That's what you’ll discover by reading my novel.
My book started with a simple question, made in a joking manner. But it has mostly become a personal challenge... to create a book from this playful thought.
Creating a plausible world, built from current experiences. A world not so imaginary, a world where we could all—both you and me—live in 74 years.
An accessible novel, but one that makes you think. How would you imagine this world in 2099, based on your experience of today’s world?
I, who never imagined I would write a book until recently… 2099 is coming soon.
You will discover a novel of anticipation, built around a human story, full of values, transmission, and emotions.
